Although wireless networks are mainly used for applications that are difficult to connect or install in rotating equipment, the use of wireless networks is growing throughout the industry. The main driver of this growth is the increasing use of mobile devices to communicate or transmit equipment status and maintenance information.

Since wireless networks have not been widely deployed throughout the industry, many users have doubts about how best to install and operate them. In fact, the application of wireless networks in industry is one of the most common problems we receive from readers.

To learn more about configuring wireless networks for mobile devices, we contacted Justin Shade, an expert in wireless product marketing at Phoenix Contact, who is in charge of our latest podcast.

When it comes to the discussion of industrial wireless networks, most of the attention tends to focus on more famous industrial protocols, such as WirelessHART and ISA100. But over the past year or so, more and more people have begun to pay attention to the use of cellular networks and Wi-Fi in industrial space.

New routers from B&B Electronics combine cellular networks with Wi-Fi in one device. Spectre 3G-W cellular router is designed to provide local machine-to-machine (M2M) network connection through multiple options: built-in Wi-Fi hotspots, Ethernet 10/100 and I/O ports, and Internet connection through CDMA and HSPA + cellular telephone network. B&B says Spectre 3G-W can be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as scanning and connecting to existing short-range wireless networks.

Industrial uses of Wi-Fi hotspots include locating routers in dangerous or inaccessible locations so that technicians can connect to routers via Wi-Fi rather than physically connecting to Ethernet ports. It is reported that the router can be connected to any wi - fi - enabled device, such as sensors, and can provide remote Ethernet connection to any device within the cellular network.

"Gigacube" is a device named by Vodafone, and Huawei's name of b528-23a is easier to forget. Vodafone did not even try to hide the fact that this was Huawei's product first. There's a big Huawei logo on it. It doesn't mention Vodafone or Gigacube.

The router is essentially a white cylinder that looks like a distant relative of Glade's automatic shower bathroom freshener. It's made of plastic -- not surprisingly -- and has four state lights (signal, LAN, Wi-Fi and power) on the front, as well as power and WPS buttons. On the back is a flap covering two connectors to connect an external antenna and a telephone socket (unused), a Gigabit LAN/WAN port and a proprietary power connector.

Next you will see a SIM card slot (Vodafone pre-installed a data SIM card for testing purposes, data is unlimited) and all the default settings in detail (two SSIDs plus Wi-Fi keys, and the login and password of the management panel).

Gigacube does not contain any batteries, and because of the proprietary nature of the connector, you can't use portable mobile batteries to power it, which is a regrettable thing - it opens up new possibilities. Its power adapter is a 12W (12V, 1A) model, which can replace a 5V, 2.4A model.

Therefore, it is portable, not mobile 4G router.

You can connect up to 20 devices to routers at any time, Vodafone claims, and you'll be able to reach up to 300 Mbps because it's a Cat 6 LTE device. The reality is different, depending on where you are (our location is somewhere in Bedford County): We averaged 23/14 Mbps using Netflix Fast.com, 31.78/16.85 Mbps using Speedtest.net, and 29.5/14.6 Mbps using Google's own speed test. All numbers are used for upload and download speeds, respectively. The average delay is about 40 milliseconds.

Vodafone has a "useful" network status checker, and we use quotation marks because it shows that the upload and download speeds of 4G can range from 0.9 to 23.2 Mbps to 3.8 to 60 Mbps - that's not our expectation of LTE!

Note that this is a dual-band device with 2x2 MIMO antenna settings for better coverage. There's even a free Android mobile app (Huawei Hilink) that allows you to view the status of mobile broadband devices and manage their network connections.

As for its web-based user interface, it can be described in plain terms, providing a small amount of functionality, but at least in a direct way. With VPN, you can configure virtual servers, DMZ, UPNP, parental control and so on.

In our conversation, Shade pointed out that in assessing the "who", "what", "where", "when" and "why" of industrial wireless networks, most people focus too much on "what" (i.e. products) and ignore other factors.
